A pregnant woman and her two daughters died on Monday night after drowning in a local river in Sindupalchok district.
Indra Maya Thami and her daughters, Lalita and Laxmi, in Gorthali VDC-7 drowned in the Guihe River as they were trying to cross the seasonal river on their way back to Indra Maya´s maternal house after attending a feast at the house of one of their relatives on the occasion of Teej.
“The river had swollen following a heavy downpour on Monday night. They were swept away as they tried to cross it at night,” said Sub-Inspector Mohan Mani Katuwal at Area Police Office.
Indra Maya had along to her maternal home with her daughters on Monday.
“She had held Laxmi, her younger daughter, in her arms, and had clasped Lalita´s hands as she tried to cross the river. But the powerful current swept them, and Lalita eventually drowned. When she tried to save her, all three of them were swept away,” said Indra Maya´s aunt, who had accompanied them.
She bemoaned that she could not do anything to save them as she was helpless that rainy night.
After she informed the locals about the incident, they went searching for the missing family members, and found the body of Indra Maya some one kilometer downstream.
The police found her daughters´ bodies around eight kilometers downstream on Tuesday morning.
It has also been learnt that Indra Maya was pregnant for seven months.
Meanwhile, two persons of a family in Ghuskun VDC- 6 in the district have died after landslide triggered by heavy rainfall buried them along with their animal shed on Monday night.
The deceased have been identified as 70-years-old Mon Bahadur Bohora and his seven-year-old granddaughter Isha, informed the police.
They used to live in the shed to guard their livestock.
