Once upon a time a poisonous cane toad lived in the South Sea Islands, unloved and unwanted. Condemned as an ecological disaster, the Australian army was even deployed to get rid of it.

Then one day a Polish fairy waved her wand and the plain old cane toad turned into a precious fashion accessory.

That’s the story of Polish designer Monika Jarosz’s luxury Kobja brand inspired by the fairytale idea of the “toad that transforms itself into Prince Charming”.

Introduced from South America decades ago to control the native cane beetle, the cane toad may have outstayed its welcome in the South Sea Islands, but today their skins have become a much-prized luxury fashion material.

A friend unknowingly set the wheels of innovation in motion by giving Jarosz a stuffed frog from New Zealand as a gift.

“(It) disgusted me but ended up by fascinating me,” she said.

Three short years later, and her luxury accessory business is producing bags, belts and purses made from whole skins, set with semi-precious stones or Swarovski crystals in place of the eyes.

The high-end leather items, which come in an array of colours including vermilion red, emerald green, turquoise, fuchsia and black, are now sold in Asia, Europe and the US.

A purse can cost between between 220 and 250 euros ($300 and $340), depending on the country, while a large bag would be priced at around 1,200 euros.

Jarosz came to France from Poland 12 years ago to work as a model before developing an interest in design, in particular working with unusual materials.

Fascinated by the stuffed frog, she recalled that the more she stroked it the more the idea of creating something “really good like a jewel” from a similar material started to take shape.

But finding skins to work with presented a problem. In vain, Jarosz made inquiries with restaurants serving frogs legs.

Then she discovered the existence of the toads of the South Sea Islands where they had proliferated to such an extent they were in the process of destroying several local species.

Animal defence organisations had recommended that they be selectively eliminated.

With the help of a taxidermist in the Australian city of Cairns, Jarosz set about transforming the skins into high fashion.

After the taxidermy, the skins are tanned, dried and coloured in France, ending up in a workshop in Paris where the leather is cut, stitched, set with crystals or stones and lined with lamb or goat skin.

“When I called Jean-Charles Duchene (who runs the tannery in Paris) for a quote, they thought it was a joke,” she recalled.

“It was a challenge because we had to adapt to the material. The toad (skin) is denser than lamb, the dye is fixed quicker and it needs less,” she added.

A symbol of fertility and prosperity in some cultures, the toad is also linked to sorcery, Jarosz added.

Now sold in luxury goods shops or concept stores in Tokyo, Beijing, New York, Paris and Berlin, Jarosz’s quirky products have developed an almost cult-like following among some customers.

Some even give their bags names, she said, and regularly update her with news about them.

Kathmandu, Oct. 27: Employees have shown interest in being assigned in the polling booths in Kathmandu district under the upcoming CA election.

There are 10 constituencies and 311 polling booths in 742 centres in the district. The district has 259,352 women and 272, 736 men and 14 third gender voters.

Chief Election Officer Achyut Bista said the employees have shown interest and are requesting for polling booths closer for their residences.

He said selection of some 5,000 staffs has been started and training will start soon. On the other hand, the election officer’s office has been drawing the attention of the candidates for abiding by election code of conduct. There are 367 candidates here.

The office ordered UCPN-Maoist candidate Renu Dahal to remove her banner at Constituency No.1 saying it was against the code of conduct and monitoring is on, he said.

Trading on the international exchange market Forex, you should keep to the 5 rules.

It means that you can divide your work in five main stages, so that three of them should be based upon the thorough data analysis and last two – on reflex. Let’s consider all five principles of trading operation.

First rule. Opportunities quest. The first rule of trading includes monitoring and analysis of charts in order to find the most appropriate moment for you to enter the forex market. Above all, it is the intellectual process, but emotions play a great role here. Every trader should determine his own process of opportunities quest and follow it closely.

Second rule. Opening position. This part of trading process should be exclusively based on reflexes. Since you analysed the market, you should spend only several seconds to open a position. The most important thing here is vigor, there should not be any delay in opening the position. You have to rely on your intuition, because only diffident trader is destined to failure on Forex.

Third rule. The third rule is the most difficult in trading because here you should not give free play to your emotions which are the main envy of successful and profitable trading. You should move forward, you should ignore your fear, greed and hope. Only if a trader realizes how to ignore his emotions, he will be successful on Forex.

Forth rule. Closing the position. Here you should bring everything up the automatism. You should act quickly.

Fifth rule. Is it really important? Asking any successful and experienced trader you will get a positive answer to this question.

If you strive to achieve the success on Forex market, you should keep a diary of all trading operations – only self-analysis will help you to make your trading at Forex market profitable.

And do not forget one very important factor, if you are newbie at Forex market, the first account you open should be opened on forex demo account because training within real market conditions but using virtual money will help you to realise what Forex market is and how you can earn money from it.

Uruguay's drug tsar says the country plans to sell legal marijuana for $1 a gram to combat drug-trafficking, according to a local newspaper.

The plan to create a government-run legal marijuana industry has passed the lower house of Congress, and Uruguay's president, José Mujica, expects to push it through the Senate soon as part of his effort to explore alternatives in the war on drugs.

The measure would make Uruguay the first country in the world to license and enforce rules for the production, distribution and sale of marijuana for adult consumers.

Marijuana sales should start in the second half of 2014 at a price of about $1 a gram, drug chief Julio Calzada told Uruguay's El País, on Sunday – an eighth or less of what it costs at legal medical dispensaries in some US states.

Calzada said one gram would be enough "for one marijuana cigarette or two or three slimmer cigarettes".

He said the idea was not to make money but to fight petty crime and wrench the market away from illegal dealers.

"The illegal market is very risky and of poor quality," he said. The state was going to offer "a safe place to buy a quality product and on top of that, it's going to sell it at the same price".

In August, Calzada had estimated the price would be about $2.50 a gram. Sales would be restricted to locals, who would be able to buy up to 40g a month.

Smoking pot has long been legal in Uruguay, but growing, carrying, buying or selling it has been punishable by prison terms.

About 120,000 Uruguayans consume marijuana at least once a year, according to the National Drug Council. Of these, 75,000 smoke it every week and 20,000 every day.

In the US, the states of Washington and Colorado have legalised marijuana and adopted rules governing its sale. Unlike Uruguay, they will tax marijuana, seeing it as a revenue source, when it goes on legal sale next year.

In Washington, the state marijuana consultant has projected legal pot might cost $13-$17 a gram. Marijuana in the medical dispensaries typically ranges from $8-$14 a gram in Washington depending on quality.

 What I did after experimenting with AdSense and pay per click...

One day I was researching AdSense and other pay per click programs and came across information about online money making opportunities. I thought that some of them sounded pretty interesting, but I was skeptical. I thought all free money making opportunities must be scams.

At the same time that I was learning about making money online, I was learning how to be a new mom. I was breastfeeding and exhausted because my baby didn't sleep well. That's when I found Cafe Mom. It's a great social network that is just for moms. I saw other moms on the Cafe Mom forums talking about making money with GPT and paid survey sites. So many moms just like me were talking about making money with these sites and even showing screen shot proofs of their payment.

That's when I started experimenting with various opportunities and that's when I also started to get paid. If it was free to join and it paid, I gave it a try. I found that there are many affiliate programs that allow you to offer products and earn commission on the sales. If you have a blog (even a free Blogger blog) or write pages on sites like Squidoo, Huppages, etc, then you can offer products via your affiliate link and earn money. There are several lists with “ways to make money with a website” on the Internet, but none of them seem to be complete. That is why I decided to create this one. If you know a method that is not listed below, just let us know and we’ll update it.

Notice that ways to make money with a website are different from ways to make more money from it. Methods to increase your traffic or click-through rate will help you make more money, but they do not represent a method of making money per se.

For example, one could suggest that blending AdSense ads with the content is a way to make money from a website. In reality it’s not; it’s just a way to make more money by improving your ad click-through rate. The real monetization method behind it is a PPC ad network.  

1. CPM Advertising Networks

CPM advertising networks behave pretty much as PPC networks, except that you get paid according to the number of impressions (i.e., page views) that the ads displayed on your site will generate. CPM stands for Cost per Mille, and it refers to the cost for 1,000 impressions.

A blog that generates 100,000 page views monthly displaying an advertising banner with a $1 CPM, therefore, will earn $100 monthly.

CPM rates vary with the network, the position of the ad and the format. The better the network, the higher the CPM rate (because they have access to more advertisers). The closer you put the ad to the top of the page, the higher the CPM. The bigger the format (in terms of pixels), the higher the CPM.

You can get as low as $0,10 and as high as $10 per 1,000 impressions (more in some special cases). CPM advertising tends to work well on websites with a high page views per visitor ratio (e.g., online forums, magazines and so on).

2.Premium Content

Some websites and blogs give away part of their content for free, and charge for access to the premium content and exclusive tools.

SEOMoz is a good example. They have a very popular blog that gives advice and information on wide range of SEO related topics. On top of that visitors can decide to become premium members. It costs $48 monthly and it grants them access to guides, tools and other exclusive material.

3. PPC Advertising Networks

Google AdSense is the most popular option under this category, but there are also others. Basically you need to sign up with the network and paste some code snippets on your website. The network will then serve contextual ads (either text or images) relevant to your website, and you will earn a certain amount of money for every click.

The profitability of PPC advertising depends on the general traffic levels of the website and, most importantly, on the click-through rate (CTR) and cost per click (CPC). The CTR depends on the design of the website. Ads placed abode the fold or blended with content, for instance, tend to get higher CTRs. The CPC, on the other hand, depends on the nice of the website. Mortgages, financial products and college education are examples of profitable niches (clicks worth a couple of dollars are not rare), while tech-related topics tend to receive a smaller CPC (sometimes as low as a couple of cents per click).

The source of the traffic can also affect the overall CTR rate. Organic traffic (the one that comes from search engines) tends to perform well because these visitors were already looking for something, and they tend to click on ads more often. Social media traffic, on the other hand, presents terribly low CTRs because these visitors are tech-savvy and they just ignore ads.

4. Direct Banner Advertising

Selling your own advertising space is one of the most lucrative monetization methods. First and foremost because it enables you to cut out the middleman commissions and to determine your own rates. The most popular banner formats on the web are the 728×90 leaderboard, the 120×600 skyscraper, the 300×250 rectangle and the 125×125 button.

The downside of direct banner advertising is that you need to have a big audience to get qualified advertisers, and you will need to spend time managing the sales process, the banners and the payments.

5. Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is a very popular practice on the Internet. Under this system you have a merchant that is willing to let other people (the affiliates) sell directly or indirectly its products and services, in exchange for a commission. Sometimes this type of advertising is also called CPA (cost per action) or CPL (cost per lead) based.

Affiliates can send potential customers to the merchant using several tools, from banners to text links and product reviews.

In order to find suitable affiliate programs you can turn to individual companies and publishers like Dreamhost and SEOBook, or join affiliate marketplaces and networks.

6. Monetization Widgets

The latest trend on the web are widgets that let you monetize your website. Examples include Widgetbucks and SmartLinks. Some of these services operate under a PPC scheme, others behave like text link ads, others yet leverage affiliate links.

Their main differentiator, however, is the fact that they work as web widgets, making it easier for the user to plug and play the service on its website.

7. Text Link Ads

After Google declared that sites selling text links without the nofollow tag would be penalized, this monetization method became less popular.

Many website owners are still using text links to monetize their sites, though, some using the nofollow tag and some not.

The advantage of this method is that it is not intrusive. One can sell text links directly through his website or use specialized networks like Text-Link-Ads and Text-Link-Brokers to automate the process.

8. Sponsored Reviews

Joining one of these sponsored reviews marketplaces will give you the opportunity to write sponsored posts on a wide range of topics. Not all bloggers are willing to get paid to write about a specific product or website (because it might compromise the editorial credibility), but the ones who do are making good money out of it.

If your blog has a big audience you could also offer sponsored reviews directly, cutting off the commissions of the middleman.

9. Sponsors for Single Columns or Events

If you website has specific columns or events (e.g., a weekly podcast, an interview series, a monthly survey, a special project) you could find companies to sponsor them individually.

This method increases the monetization options for website owner, while giving advertisers the possibility to target a more specific audience and with a reduced commitment.

Mashable illustrates the case well. They have several advertising options on the site, including the possibility to sponsor specific columns and articles, including the “Daily Poll” and the “Web 2.0 Invites.”

Problogger also runs group writing projects occasionally, and before proceeding he publicly announce the project asking for sponsors.

10. RSS Feed Ads

With the quick adoption of the RSS technology by millions of Internet users, website owners are starting to find ways to monetize this new content distribution channel.

Feedburber already has its own publisher network, and you can sign-up to start displaying CPM based advertising on your feed footer. Bidvertiser recently introduced a RSS feed ad option as well, with a PPC scheme.

Finally, some blogs are also opting to sell banners or sponsored messages on their feed directly. John Chow and Marketing Pilgrim are two examples.

How Much Money Can You Make on YouTube?

It would be hard to find a person who never wondered how much money you can make by uploading videos to YouTube, especially if one of your videos go viral. That’s exactly what happened with the video below where little Charlie bites the finger of his brother:

The video is now the 6th most viewed all time, with close to 430 million views. If you exclude commercial videos this is the most viewed one. And how much money did the parents make by uploading it?

They didn’t reveal the exact number, but they said it was more than $150,000. Not bad for 57 seconds and a camera huh?
